Well I naïvely thought writing a kids book would be easy. It's fewer words that's gotta be easy. But I think the words have to be a little bit more precise and thought about, because it’s gonna be read to little kids. consistency in writing is very important. I think you’ve got to show up every day, you gotta be getting words down on the page, even if your heart’s not in it. Even if you don't have any ideas, you’ve just gotta be putting stuff down on the page. And back from my script writing days a lot of people would refer to that as a vomit pass, which is pretty much a first draft. Get the words out there on the page, you get the idea out there. Because if you stop, you’ve stopped. Whereas if you’re being consistent in writing every day, you’re at least getting something, you've got something to work with. But if you're not getting anything down on the page you've got nothing to work with.

Do you remember that scene in ‘The Shining’? The one where Jack Nicholson is trying to get some writing done. Well I wouldn't exactly class that as a good example of parenting. I’m trying to find that quite time that clear space in my head, where I can let the story flow. Its already been established that I can draw anywhere on my phone and I recon I could illustrate in an earthquake quite happily without getting too distracted. But writing I need the clear space in my head, I need some peace and quiet and I think the only way I'm gonna be able to do this is to get up super early, before anyone else, and that means getting to bed probably before anyone else too. Or getting to bed at the same time as my daughter. But lots of creative people I have found, find this early morning, first thing in the morning kind of thing is the perfect opportunity to get the creative writing done.

Jumping back into productivity with a positive mindset. The biggest thing to start with is to know how much time you've got to work with, and from there work out what your goals are, and then try and realistically work out what you can get done in the time available. Being a stay at home dad initially feels like time is of a minimum, but when I looked at it there’s little snippets of time all over the place, half an hour here, an hour there. So what I'm looking at doing for these little snippets of time is applying the Pomodoro method which is pretty much a cool name for a tomato timer, you know it could be called the egg method, that doesn't really sound as cool and that's only a couple minutes anyway. So Pomodoro method is about short burst of 25 minutes or so where you focus a hundred percent on that job, try and get that specific task done within that amount of time and when the timer goes that's it, you're done, you're finished.

I would spend so much time organising and arranging my to-do lists, and obsessing over them that I’d spend all this time doing that rather than doing the things on the to-do list. I'd like to break it down into a list of three items that you come up with at the start of every day and the three items will be, the first item is that one big thing which is gonna move you towards your end goal. the second one is doing something uncomfortable that you don't want to do that you know you have to do if you want to progress further towards your goals. And the third thing on that list is the things that you have to do, those urgent things that need your attention straight away, otherwise you might be put in jail or fined a large amount of money. So they are my three items on my daily checklist
